Mental health is an important component of overall well-being and is intertwined with physical health and other dimensions of wellness. Mental health is the ability to recognize, cope with, and resolve the internal and external demands of life, and the capacity to manage stress, develop resilience, and build meaningful relationships. These skills are essential to the promotion of wellness and the prevention of mental illness. Wellness is not just the absence of mental illness but an active process of achieving optimal mental health and well-being. Research suggests that wellness is composed of seven dimensions: emotional, spiritual, physical, environmental, financial, occupational, and social. Each dimension contributes to an individual’s overall health and quality of life. When it comes to mental health and wellness, it is important to recognize that all seven dimensions are interconnected and must be addressed to achieve optimal health. For example, emotional wellness is closely linked to physical health, as one’s emotional state can impact physical health. Similarly, a lack of social support can cause emotional distress, leading to a decline in mental health. While mental health is a complex issue, it is important to recognize that it can be improved through a holistic approach to wellness. By attending to the different dimensions of wellness, individuals can create a healthier and more balanced lifestyle, leading to improved mental health.
